NOT JUST ANY BURGER COMBO…

After waking up nursing a rather sore head on Saturday I got on my bike and got the paper… While at the newsagency I spied the Sydney Morning Herald Everyday Eats, Best Meals in Sydney for under $30. How can one walk past this?! I returned home triumphant and raided its pages for the ultimate weekend hangover curing adventure… I found it. Revolver cafe in Annandale, voted the best burger in Sydney. The best. This had to be eaten.

Once seated at this very lovely little cafe, I spied Milkshakes…what better combo than a burger and a shake?! Oh my goodness! The best milkshake (really a thickshake) I have had in at least 7 years. I’m not even kidding. Do it. Go there and get this combo!

Oh, and the burger…Amazeballs! Big beef pattie, beetroot, pickled cucumber, rocket, gooey smoked mozzarella and a delicious fresh bun. I’m going back next Saturday…because let’s be honest, I’ll probably have a very sore head next week too.

Floral fanciful combos…

Another combo obsession…Vintage floral tablecloths or surfaces…most often found at farmers markets…hidden under crates of apples. I’ll be out hunting for more tomorrow morning.

clothing combos…

Last night I went to dinner. In my new jumper. My new jumper is a neon greeny yellowy and I’m in love with it.

It looks particularly good when combined with my golden nails. While at dinner, it also looked good combined with the red and cream striped couch. Bob was also rocking a pretty good combo with his purple striped t-shirt and his grey woolen jumper…I think the combo of this with his manly man beard is very good indeed!

MORE FOOD COMBOS. OF COURSE.

Yesterday was an epic eating day. These are coming round more often than not lately…must be the change of season. Sure.

I’m cooking alot for work again and coming home armed with ingredients I wouldn’t normally have at home. Much to my households pleasure.

Yesterday’s snack attack. A combo brought to you by the one and only Jo-Roxy.

LIQUORICE + ICY COLD MILK = GOOD COMBO!

If you have not yet indulged in this amazing combo. I suggest you do so. Today.

DINNER COMBO.

I had a bag of Jerusalem artichokes + I had a box of cream + I had a delicious pouch of chicken stock= GOOD COMBO so I made creamy artichoke soup. It tasted like a smoky forest. Quite delicious. super easy. Slow boil all three together, for 30 mins, season and puree.

I was also lucky enough to walk off the shoot with some very expensively lovely dark french chocolate. I melted said French chocolate + zested and squeezed some orange into it + whipped some cream + added it all together = CHOCOLATE ORANGE CREAM.

It was gobbled up so quickly, I didn’t get a photo of it. I must admit, we all felt quite ill in bed.

Desk combos.

Sitting at my desk.

I’ve surrounded myself with some very good combos.

My two favourite combos from my desk today are:

My t-shirt + a bit of my glass collection + pretty little buds from lovely Anne = Good combo!

A little collection of lovely images above my desk.

PIZZA + HOT SAUCE!

Perhaps this is a cheat post…

I’m just super excited about our hot sauce creation…

Last night we couldn’t get into the movie we wanted to see so Bob and I made pizzas and hot sauce. Good combo!

We bought some delicious salami from La Macelleria (more on this amazing new Gould Street addition soon!) in Bondi and had to wait for our dough to rise… so we made hot sauce.

It has become a bit of a hot sauce or condiment relationship this thing between us…so we decided to make our won. Starting from last night. and the result. 3 out of 5 chillies! It is pretty hot, I had some dried Chipotle and Pasilla chillies left from a Mexican cookbook I did last year so we soaked them, roasted some capsicum, garlic, birds eye chillies with tomato and whizzed it. Ole!

Grande Huevos (Huge balls) is born! and now smothered over everything I ate today, tomorrow and beyond.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

X

My sister has always bitten her nails. Nasty habit. She agreed.

Then my sister got jealous of peoples pretty painted nails and decided to stop biting and start painting. A few of her nails started growing faster than the others so she would reward that nail with a pretty colour. “The feature nail” as she deemed it. She went out and bought pretty colours and little by little got so excited about her feature nail that she didn’t even realise they were suddenly all feature nails. I’m very proud of her.

I also really like her nail polish collection… Such good combos!

SHOES + SURFACES.

My other combo obsession for the week are my feet in my shoes on an interesting surface or combined with interesting patterns. Yes, girls just love taking snaps of their feet, I know, I know…

chasing chinatown condiment combos.

My love affair with China town started when my family moved to Redfern in 1987.

We used to walk to Paddy’s market every Saturday to buy our weekly vegetables. Vegetables is about the only thing my father actually enjoys spending money on, so we would all embrace this with gusto…

That market place is a happy and excited place, full of wonder, noise and smells. Being an extroverted little blonde curly haired thing I relished the attention I got from the stall holders and generally charmed my way into a free handful of cherries or hot nuts.

When we moved to Bondi, we didn’t get to Chinatown as much…

Something I’m making up for now.

I go to Chinatown at least 3 times a week, for delicious dumplings, fun supermarket shopping and generally my work will take me there too.

CHINESE NOODLE RESTAURANT.

Condiments include: Black Vinegar, soy sauce, chilli flakes in oil

Free: Water and tea

In Burlington Arcade, which isn’t actually really an arcade. When you arrive you will be met (attacked) by the door man of the other Chinese noodle house, he will scream a you to have your meal there, “to take a chance” to “try something new” he will beg too “Please, Please” he will cry…do not be sucked in. This is not where you should dine and part with your (too) few pennies.

Instead keep walking to the other Chinese Noodle Restaurant, where you will most likely be greeted by a violin playing door man and a gaggle of harried women ushering you in to their tiny space. The ceiling should be covered in plastic grapes and there should be tapestries of colonial Dutchland on the walls…yes? Right place.

The tea is plonked on the table, chilli flakes in oil come thick and free and you will need to ask more napkins. One of the best parts of dumpling eating and beyond in the depths of Chinatown is the freedom of concocting your own condiment. Making ones own mix of black vinegar, soy sauce, chilli oil and chilli flakes is a very satisfying and delicious exercise.

Once your personal condiment has been created you can move on.

I can recommend the following dishes, both for their deliciousness, price and consistency.

Egg and Chive pastry…start with this. It comes quick and hot, creamy egg mixed with garlic chives and spread out on a thin pastry, folded and fried on a hot grill plate…a Northern Chinese Gozleme, if you like… Dipped in chilli and gobbled while boiling has to be one of my favourite snacks.  Next come the dumplings, fillings are either egg and chive or pork and chive. No messing around here. They come fried, boiled or steamed and are available in huge proportions…16 dumplings for $8 anyone?. Ridiculous. Rad.

These are the two dishes I go back for everytime, I have however, strayed from this rule and ordered more from their vast menu… The fragrant braised eggplant was somewhat sticky/crunchy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside, perfect combo. The tofu hot pot stew, tasted, as my fellow diner said, a bit like hot vegemite…

The braised green beans with fried chilli were delicious but the vegetable noodle soup seemed like they had got a handful of vegetables from the bottom of the fridge, chucked them in hot water and thrown in some noodle. The noodles were pretty amazing though. It is after all, what this tiny Northern Chinese diner is famed for, their noodles. Thin and thick all at once, cooked al dente (is there a Chinese term for this?) and extremely Moorish…I will go back and try what the girls next to me were tucking into, minced pork and chives on a bed of noodles.

All of this, washed down with a can of Tsing Tao (bought next door for $2) and then you are brought the bill. Everytime I think “oh, they must have missed something” but no, it’s just really freakin’ cheap. I have never paid more than $10 in there and everytime I walk away chirpy and satisfied. A perfect combo.

Go there.

hello weekend combo countdown…

So today I’ve been cooking with apples. Heaps of apples.

Apples + cinnamon is one of my favourite combos.

This combo led me to think about my favourite muesli…

which then led me to think about the weekend!

Every saturday I go to Eveleigh Farmers Market. I get my knives sharpened, I buy a coffee, I buy those freakin’ amazing dumplings from Kylie Kwong and then I buy my favourite muesli. Farmer Jo green apple porridge…is best when made into bircher but delicious just with milk too. Last night I baked some apples and scattered the last of my muesli on top with some brown sugar, cinnamon and sultanas…Like an even better crumble.

Here it is…

This photo just got me excited about cold winter mornings + making porridge with wooden spoons + keeping warm + my boyfriends green woollen socks + eating bircher out of wooden bowls. Winter ain’t so bad.

Bring on the weekend.
I’m picking up a beautiful burlesque bombshell from the airport and taking her to the markets with me.
