kitchen trapped

So, hello! I’m cooking all day today. I’m testing recipes for my favourite magazine and listening to Bon Iver = Good combo.

I have eaten this delicious combo so far…

Peanut butter + Alfalfa = good combo! I was one of those weird kiddies at school with the lunchbox full of “goodness”..I guess most kids are like that these days but back in my day, falafel, hummus and tabouleh were met with snickering from my simple vegemite whitebread eating friends. I did, however, coerce a few of these whitebread folk into the brighter world with the combo of alfalfa and peanut butter rye bread sandwiches. Delicious. So, my little mid morning snack of the day.

More combos to come…as is usually the case when I’m kitchen trapped!

Straying from the theme slightly…

Sydney is getting cold. We’re all a bit sad about this fact. We are also in denial that Sydney   actually gets cold. It does. It is.

Today I’m staying inside and I’m playing with my cutlery.

There are some good combos in this bunch.

I’m dreaming of a deli in New York, I want pastrami and pickles with my whisky. I love the combo of this checked burgundy tea towel and the black and white lino. I also love my new knife. I picked this pretty piece up at Salvos the other day.

So New York dreaming…

Someone pretty bought me this vintage map of New Yorks Subways. Such a good combo with the black and white lino! I’m going to cover my small coffee table with this map. I love the idea of eating off New York.

It should be said…I have a rather large collection of cutlery. Today I’ve decided to make my good combos with my favourite pieces of cutlery. I tried to link the cutlery with the tablecloth and a vessel of one of my favourite beverages.

KNIVES + GLENMORANGIE WHISKY

FORKS + PINOT GRIGIO

SPOONS + BAILEYS

TEASPOONS + MILK

Viva Sydney Mexicana…

Yes, Sydney has been inundated with Mexican eating holes. This is a good thing. We certainly do not require anymore venues to get our taco fix but boy oh boy I sure am glad we can get one! Like many of my friends I travelled to America and returned home with tales of The amazing food trucks! The amazing tacos! The amazing iced tea! The amazing Wholefood Market! So I was very excited when the Mexican bus came to town…(Still desperately waiting on WholeFoods to arrive!)  Even if there seems to be a mexican restaurant/themed pub/bar opening every weekend in every suburb of Sydney, hey, the more the merrier really.

I also just found out that El Loco, behind the Excelsior Hotel on Foveaux Street does Taco’s until 3am. How very L.A. Yay. And they are good. The Especiale Quesadilla of the day is usually my pick, last time at about 2am it was a spicy chorizo, fried halloumi with chipotle mayo combo (very good combo!). I am now addicted. My tongue was on fire and my taste buds woke the hell up to say a drunken hello.

However, I digress… The combo of today is my delicioso lunch at none other but trusty ol’ Guzman Y Gomez. Their vege nachos is generous and oh so satisfying. Bob doesn’t agree with my selection of Nachos, he always scoffs and orders his burrito, feeling all proud but you see, a nachos is just so fun! It’s like a party in every mouthful and you get to use your hands and get all saucy and cheesy. It’s like a really big, involved plate of dip & crackers. I love dip & crackers. What could be more exciting than a mexican themed dip & cracker party. Oh man. I also love the self serve hot sauce, fresh coriander and jalapno…FREE CONDIMENTS = Jerrie’s idea of heaven. Oh! and the corn chips are thick crunchy golden triangles of awesomeness.

All in all, the perfect combo! Huzzah.

Go Mexican Sydney, Go!

swimming in the rain…

Last night I went for a swim at Victoria park pool, it was raining and delicious. I have swam since I was young and the smells and sounds of a swimming pool tend to really relax me now that I’m not swimming competitively. I love the City of Sydney pools, they are all really clean and open very reasonable hours, Victoria Park is open til 8pm and the Ian Thorpe Swimming Centre until 10pm. When I’ve had a pretty rubbish day, I try and dive under the water and smash it all out. Last night in the rain, I thought the pool looked especially sexy.

Sydney has been raining for nearly a whole month. We are flooding and very very wet, not to mention very sad to say goodbye to Summer. At least swimming in the rain is a pleasant pastime.

1. Swimming + Rain + nighttime = Very special combo.

Blue blue and blue.

I went and sat at Burnt Orange this morning in Mosman. I like their cups. I like my blue nails with their cups. I also liked my newly scored second hand copy of Great Romantics  with my blue stripy jeans, blue nails and blue cup. All in all = a pretty blue combo.

Burnt Orange had a delicious breakfast menu. I had the Eggs Benedict, the hollandaise was perfectly creamy and the eggs just runny enough without ruining the beautiful soft and sweet brioche they sat upon. My dining companion had the full vegetarian breakfast, I have never seen so much avocado! Lashings of creamy spiced avocado all over his sourdough…I was a little bit jealous. Thanks Burnt Orange for the generous servings, the low prices and giving me a good combo! I’ll be back.

10am and already 1 GOOD COMBO!

Good morning…

This morning I walked from the city to Potts Point to meet my mother to have my favourite bircher, which I believe when combined with a flat white is a really good combo….

Good combo #1.

Bircher muesli + a flat white at my new favourite cafe La Croix in Potts Point = GOOD MORNING COMBO.

On my walks through the back streets of Darlinghurst/Potts Point I always get excited about the architecture…The buildings harp back to a time of the silent movie and beautiful dresses and pretty parties. I like to pretend it is still the 1920’s when I wander these streets… One thing I love the most about the apartment blocks are the tiles. I wish there were more tiled buildings in the city. I once lived in Sardinia, Italy and so many of the apartments are covered in tiles, they shine in the afternoon sunshine and stand there looking strong and proud. Anyway, this brings me to combo number 2 of the day…

Good combo #2.

Tile tramping and a tiled entrance…

Jerrie-Joy + Blog = Hopefully a good combo!

Good combos come in varying degrees of both goodness and comboness.

My obsession with capturing a good combo a day has led me to create this here visual journey. Starting from today I endeavour to share my captured combos. Obviously this is a totally subjective mission but I do hope you will find the combos pleasing.

I am a freelance food stylist and this allows me a great many opportunities to find said combos.

I shop alot. For food and pretty things.

I eat alot. For work and play.

I rumage alot. For vintage and new.

I walk alot. For pleasure and pain.

I drive alot. For escapes and entrapment.

COMBO # 1…

This combination appeals to me because of the colours with that pop of red and also the fact that both mustard and tomato sauce are a perfect combo with beef. Double good combo!

Yes, I was at Ikea today. I really just go to look in the Market Hall, where I will always buy a frame or two and usually end up leaving with something made of glass. Ikea, actually, do really good glass. The cow image is from a drive by Glenmore Meats in Glebe, it’s a wholesale butchery. I have never been inside but the bargains really do look appealing…it’s just a nicer notion to go to the butcher rather than a factory of meat goods…I can’t even buy my meat from a supermarket. Anyway, I digress, I just love the signage…I wonder how easy it would be to pull this off the wall, should one so desire to.

So concludes the first GOOD COMBO of the week.
